Horse Tracks: Safety P.J. Locke says that quarterback Bo Nix is a good ‘look off guy’ (2024)

All eyes have been on Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix through the first week of training camp. Things started off slow for Nix but the rookie has really turned the corner in recent practices and has started to stack good practices together. He is in a competition for the starting quarterback job with veteran Jarrett Stidham and he is making a pretty good case to be the week one starter. It is still early, but the Broncos' first-round pick is starting to turn some heads and is impressing coaches and his fellow teammates. One teammate who has come away impressed with Nix is starting safety P.J. Locke.

P.J. Locke can already tell that #Broncos QB Bo Nix is not like most rookie quarterbacks.

Why?

“He’s a good look-off guy. He’s really good looking off (the safeties). Even in OTAs, I was just like, ‘Man, I cannot get a bead off of him.’” pic.twitter.com/jRAAtt25bj

Locke met with the media after Thursday’s training camp practice and was asked about the Broncos rookie quarterback. He told reporters that Nix is not like most other rookie quarterbacks and that he is a good ‘look off guy’.

“Right now, what I notice from Bo is he’s a good look off guy. He’s really good looking off. Even in OTAs, I was like, ‘Man, I just cannot get a bead off of him.’ Most of the time rookie quarterbacks, their first read, they’re going to look at it. Here, he’ll look you off real quick. I think he studies the safeties. He can tell—we’re super instinctive. We try to play games with him, so he tries to play games back. That’s what I’ve noticed off the rip. He can throw the pill. He can throw it.”

He continued by saying he thinks Nix studies the safeties and that they like to play games with him but that Nix also likes to play games with them back. We’re not talking about a veteran quarterback here, we are talking about a rookie learning a complicated offense who is in the middle of his first training camp. These are pretty encouraging comments from a defender who goes up against Nix in practice.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer was at Broncos camp earlier this week and was able to get some information from the team about Nix. He was told that Nix has picked up the Broncos offense fast and that his football aptitude, work ethic, and leadership have been apparent to his coaches and veteran teammates.

Nix, for his part, has picked up the offense fast. His football aptitude, work ethic and leadership, as a guy who started 60 college games, has been apparent to his coaches and the team’s veterans alike.

It is still early, very early, but it is hard to not be encouraged about Bo Nix right now. I loved the fit during the pre-draft process and was even more excited after hearing Sean Payton gush about Nix. Now, seeing him actually improve throughout camp and play well is refreshing.

He needs to keep all this up if he wants to win the week one starting job but at least right now, it appears it is trending that way. Hopefully, he can continue to improve, get more comfortable in the offense, build chemistry with his teammates, and win the starting quarterback job.
