*************************MDOT updates traffic data website with U.P. camera views
March 29, 2010 - Planning a drive in the Upper Peninsula?
You may want to check the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Mi Drive website before you get behind the wheel.
MDOT has added views from 13 traffic cameras at locations on I-75, M-26, M-28, M-35, US-2 and US-41 to the site to help drivers check traffic and weather conditions before they hit the road.

Detroit and Grand Rapids camera views also are available. The Mi Drive also has also has a link called "Statewide Travel Times" to advise motorists of traffic flow on US, M and I routes throughout the state.
Green lines on the interactive map represent traffic that is moving smoothly, while red lines indicate traffic that may be slowed or stalled.
As before, the Mi Drive site is a quick resource for finding current information about:
- Lane closures - Construction projects - Traffic cameras, and
- Accident reports, roadway speeds and changeable message signs in Detroit.
"The Mi Drive site had over three million page views in 2009, so we know this website is providing a useful service to motorists," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "Adding new features and improvements to the Mi Drive site will continue to be a top priority for MDOT. We remain committed to keeping Michigan motorists safe, mobile, and informed."
The site also features several new layers of information on an interactive map that users can turn on and off to display information about toll bridges and tunnels, movable bridges, and bridge weight class and clearance information statewide.
Motorists using Mi Drive can access information about wait times at toll bridges and tunnels and learn whether movable bridges in the Bay area are open or closed to traffic.
Commercial truckers and dispatchers can use the bridge weight and clearance information to plan routes for oversize and overweight loads prior to submitting a permit application to MDOT's Real Estate-Utility Coordination and Permits Section.
The revisions to the site were made by MDOT and the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB), in cooperation with the state's Center for Shared Solutions and Technology Partnerships and the Intelligent Transportation Systems program office within the MDOT Division of Operations.
