Thanks for thinking about how to build a bench of the next generation of qualified neutrals! Great topics for people looking to start out in this area would be 1) practice administration issues—insurance (both liability and major med as a non W-2 employee), marketing, setting rates, etc.—the real guts of practice as a neutral, 2) “overcoming” your previous life as an advocate for whichever side to be seen as a trusted, reasonable, and truly neutral arbiter, and 3) what growth in this career path can look like and how to plan for and achieve it.

Was privileged to celebrate the 20th anniversary of my dispute resolution practice in grand style as Conference Keynote Speaker for the ADR Institute of British Columbia Annual Conference. The presentation focused on establishing a successful ADR practice - one of my favorite and oft-requested topics. Long story short: the profession needs good people to join it. Always happy to talk with people considering the profession or those wishing to expand their practices. As moderator Emily Hall noted, it can be a daunting endeavor to start a practice. But, it is worth the initial and periodic angst. Another highpoint of the day was being on a panel with trusted colleagues, friends, and outstanding arbitrators and educators Betty R. Widgeon and Rachel Goedken. My ancestors came to North America in the early 19th century through Alberta. Speaking to this group near eve of the 80th anniversary of D-Day had meaning for me because my great grandfather from Vancouver went ashore in Normandy with the Canadian Army. Many fond memories of him from my childhood. Nice to be among Canadian practitioners. Thanks ADRBC. Appreciate the invite.National Academy of ArbitratorsUniversity of Arizona, James E. Question: How enjoyable is it when you get to present to a good group LERA Chicagoon a fun topic "Top Ten Ways to Mess Up an Arbitration" with two distinguished colleagues with whom you are also friends? (Thanks to my brilliant fellow arbitratorsKathryn VanDagensLisa Salkovitz Kohn- distinguished members of the National Academy of Arbitrators)Answer: a whole bunch! The Labor and Employment Relations Association Chicago Chapter is a great place where labor, management, and the neutral meet for education in a collegial environment. The meetings are all over the Chicago area - unions halls, management law firms, and law schools. It is a great place to get to know the Chicago labor-management community in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.Nice to also welcome some new people to the group at today's eventnKathryn DamicoMichael ZuckermanTatiana Oriaikhi, Esq.@michael Abraham @ (and others l cannot find on Linked In), and see many colleagues for the first post-pandemic live event.

Honored to be the Keynote Speaker at the British Columbia ADR Institute 2024 Conference. ADR Institute of British Columbia This is especially gratifying because some very fond memories from my childhood are from Vancouver - and my great grandfather's home near Lynn Canyon. (A WW II vet and a character of epic proportions!) A few years ago we got to show our boys the street in North Vancouver named after their great great grandfather.Appreciate the invite a lot.National Academy of ArbitratorsAmerican Arbitration AssociationUniversity of Arizona, James E. If arbitration of labor and employment disputes is your area, the National Academy of Arbitrators has launched a media presence. The NAA is worth following on Linked In.Thanks to valued colleague Andrea Laiacona Dooley for leading the NAA effort. If you don't know Andrea, she has a lot of good, practical advice for arbitrators with her articles and two books - one of which I use in an ADR course I teach. She regularly posts on Linked In and always worth reading.
