One element of my new role with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) involves working with colleagues on the Green Jobs for Nature project. The site contains loads of really interesting resources and advice for a career linked to ecology and conservation and I would highly recommend having a look around if you are currently studying on a course linked to these careers, or if you have just graduated or are considering career changing. One of the elements I like the most are the testimonials from people currently in roles within the sector, giving their perspectives and experiences

Great to see! As someone lately diagnosed with ADHD, I didn’t finish university and as such, don’t have a degree. I’ve worked in low impact stores for 4.5 years as a way to do fulfilling work that is also sustainable and in that time, I’ve found I want to do more than be a store assistant (albeit an extremely knowledgeable one due to the combination of my hyper fixations with sustainability) but I’ve found the pathways limited. It seems so far the options are accreditations that aren’t affordable for a shop clerk, or to go back to university which wouldn’t work for me. I’ve looked for ‘green’ apprenticeships around London however I’ve yet to find anything, so I’m extremely glad to have seen this. Thank you!

Hi Brian, Ive always thought this resource is really great. I have actually continued to work on green jobs and skills within my new role, currently focusing on a worldwide definition of what green skills and jobs are from a youth perspective. I hope you are settling into the new role well.

There are many rewarding aspects to mentoring, one is getting to see how your mentees progress in their careers and when they start to surpass you in certain aspects too!Great work going on in Dorset carried out by some very talented countryside managers!

A great day at Sparsholt College Group Research Conference yesterday, representing the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).Some really inspirational talks including some solid careers advice from speakers including Paul Rose, who imparted simple, but important pearls, such as;"even if you're in a just for now job, there are skills that you can develop that will be of use in the future".The posters demonstrating the current cohorts research were equally inspiring, with a broad range of topics. One that struck me was the study by Georgia Hannen, showing that owners of dogs with shorter muzzles (brachycephalic) are more likely to treat their pets like children. It made me think more about the importance that people ascribe to their dogs well-being/happiness when walking in protected areas and how this translates into behaviour. The interplay between human psychology and wildlife/animals is fascinating!Congratulations to Claire Cresswell and her team for organising such a great day, showcasing the talent of the emerging workforce.

I was fortunate enough to work with incredibly creative students during my time teaching. Upon leaving I was given this drawing of a Kingfisher by one such student; Mia Burroughs!I have framed it and waiting for some hanging chain. I'm hoping she'll take commission for doing some more 😁Don't you think it's just amazing!

Yesterday marked my final day of teaching at Kingston Maurward College.Just over three years ago I stepped into a classroom as a teacher for the first time, not feeling like I had a clue of what I was doing. After subjecting many students to puns, dad jokes and anecdotes from my career in conservation, it is time to say goodbye as I hang my whiteboard pens up before departing for my new role as Careers and Education Manager with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)There are many highlights, the overarching one was getting to work with so many talented and conscientious students, I feel immensely proud to have played even the smallest part in their journey towards the sector. So when former students, most recently Chris W., shares photos of the latest project they have completed, I know it has all been worth it!And of course the Awards! Anyone who knows me well knows that I love an Awards Ceremony (being a Spurs fan means it's the only silverware I am likely to see). So to gain the Programme of the Year Award from CIEEM in 2022, and see Emily R. deservedly pick up the Student of the Year Award in 2023 were milestones!Thank you to all my current students and the kind gifts. I am enjoying the book of all of my quotes from the year, I am still trying to think of the context of pearls such as "you are walking down an alley and hear footsteps behind you - it's a fat badger" - but I haven't stopped laughing - all helped by illustrations by the talented Mia BurroughsThank you to everyone who has supported me and this course over the last three years, it was a pleasure to curate the best of Dorset's conservation sector to these up and coming professionals!
