Annual Compensation Range: $46,732 – $65,000 plus benefits

SUMMARY

The Brian P. Kennedy Leadership Fellowship at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) seeks to advance and develop the next generation of art museum leaders through an innovative, experiential program that combines curatorial and executive-level leadership responsibilities. This opportunity provides direct exposure and experience in strategy execution and policy development, curatorial and programming leadership, outreach and community engagement, board development, philanthropy stewardship, and financial and resource management. This fellowship allows for the development of a mentoring relationship that can influence future professional development and career advancement. The Museum seeks a fellow with a background in art history or a related field (such as History, Cultural Studies or Museum Studies) with a specialization in material culture.

TMA seeks to become the model art museum in the United States for its commitment to quality and its culture of belonging. This vision and the ways in which it is operationalized are established in the Museum’s Strategic Plan as well as its integrated Belonging Plan’s goals address our organization’s effort at structural change to promote diversity, equity, access and inclusion. Our organization seeks employees, gallery artists, volunteers and interns who offer diverse perspectives.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Works closely with the director and other leadership team members on projects related to the day-to-day operations and strategic management of the museum at the executive level.
  • Performs responsibilities related to the TMA collection to include:
    • Performing or updating a full collections assessment of the Museum’s collection relevant to the field of expertise
    • Working with curatorial staff to establish strategic collections plan and vision, most notably participating in planning for the reinstallation of the Museum’s world-class collection for the first time in 40 years (scheduled to open Spring 2027).
    • Participating as a member of the curatorial team in developing and coordinating exhibitions, programing, and publications.
    • Conceptualizing, defining, initiating, and conducting research to prepare and present to curatorial staff and leadership team.
    • Assisting with the initiation and implementation of collaborations with other arts institutions to create new exhibition and scholarship opportunities.
    • Working with the Learning & Interpretation Department to assist in the creation of interpretive materials related to our collection.
    • Responding to inquiries regarding the TMA collection
  • Propels a specific project (e.g., exhibition, publication, program) from start to finish which includes accountability for proposing, planning, implementation, and completion of the project.
    • The project and its proposed timeline will be determined during the fellow’s first year.
    • Collaborates with the Development and Finance Departments to include the development and management of the budget for the culminating project.
  • Participates with the Museum’s leadership team and staff in the implementation and evaluation of the TMA Strategic Plan and Agile Operating Model.
  • Supports the Director of Advocacy & External Affairs and the Chief Culture & Brand Experience Officer in implementing the Museum’s Belonging Plan.
  • Works with the CFO and other senior leadership team members to identify and establish new earned revenue opportunities.
  • Receives professional training and development including, but not limited to:
    • Structured immersion program to introduce Museum operations with curriculum framing key issues in the field.
    • Ongoing coaching from either Culture/Talent or an external resource
    • Stipend for travel to conferences and other benchmark institutions
    • Within the first year, has an opportunity to act as a manager for a project or program impacting the Museum’s strategic operating priorities.
  • Participates in the day-to-day activities of the Museum, completes independent work, and is mentored by senior curatorial staff and members of the senior management team.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Candidates must have completed their M.A. or Ph.D. within the last three years in art history or a related discipline with a preferred focus on material culture.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES

  • Specialized knowledge of Art History or a related field.
  • Strong academic performer with an interest in museum leadership positions in the future.
  • Demonstrated interest in key issues affecting the Museum fields.
  • Must be committed to the Toledo Museum of Art for the full two-year duration of the appointment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Frequently attends Museum and development events inside and outside of TMA, with non-standard, often extended work hours, weekends, and occasional overnight travel. Standard open office work environment shared with co-workers, with related phone, computer, and printer noise. Position requires ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery and audio/visual equipment such as a copy machine, printer and phone and sound systems.
