Thank you very much for stopping by in what has been an eventful day and end of a long and successful era of international football for England.

    • 'Easily one of the best' - Bellingham leads Southgate tributes
    • 'Southgate deserves respect but was not the winner England wanted'

    • Who will be next England manager?

We will be back tomorrow morning, but for now, you can head over to our Sweden v England live text, where the Lionesses must avoid defeat in their final qualifying match to guarantee a spot at Euro 2025.

It would be nice to know what progress the FA are making at St. George's park. Where are all these tactically adept coaches they are meant to be producing? And for that matter, where are the players that can play out from the back and keep possession! Nevertheless, barring the miracle of Jürgen Klopp wanting to manage England, then I would probably rather Lee Carsley took over. He has, after all, won an international tournament already. Might as well keep it in-house and try and develop what has been built already.

  3. 'Southgate should look back with pride'published at 16:46 16 July

    16:46 16 July

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

The expectation is you have to get to finals and win the trophy.

Southgate obviously, like everybody else, feels the pain, but hopefully that will wear off with time and he should look back with great pride over what he's done.

  4. 'Dyche's name should be in the hat' - Youngpublished at 16:42 16 July

    16:42 16 July

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport football news reporter

I've spoken to former England international Ashley Young at Everton’s training camp in Ireland. He was first choice left-back under Gareth Southgate at the 2018 World Cup.

"For me, Gareth Southgate has done a great job for English football and it's disappointing to see he has resigned.

"He can walk away with his held high, he brought the nation back together."

I asked him if Everton manager Sean Dyche should be considered for the England job. He said: "There will be names thrown in the hat left, right and centre and for the job the manager has done, of course his name should be in the hat."

Time for the FA to be bold and rip up the playbook. Get a great manager (wherever they are from) who will play to the teams strengths and be tough and make crucial and brutal decisions. Someone who will say no to the FA when appropriate not a safe yes man who values loyalty over glory.

  6. 'Southgate had his hand in the fire for a long time'published at 16:35 16 July

    16:35 16 July

    England

Sports psychologist Michael Caufield added that when it comes to pressure, manging England is putting 'your hand in the fire', adding that Southgate has done so for a long time.

"It's still one of the greatest privileges in world sport, but there is so much scrutiny and pressure which many of us will never be able to comprehend," Caulfield told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"You're putting your hand in the fire and Southgate had his hand in the fire for a long time."

  7. 'I've always called Southgate the Prime Minister of football'published at 16:30 16 July

    16:30 16 July

Sports psychologist Michael Caulfield, who has previously worked alongside Gareth Southgate, has said that Southgate walked away from the job as the Three Lions because he would have felt it was the right thing to do.

"He's had criticism for about 35 years and he's particularly good at handling that criticism. I've always called him the Prime Minister of football and the next England coach will be the Prime Minister of football. He's outlasted five Prime Minister because he's an outstanding leader. And an outstanding person in every way," Caufield told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"But for him, the time is right.

"I'm sure he got pushback but he knew it was the right thing to do. He is a very proud Englishman and it was his greatest honour to manage and play for his country. Whatever pushback he got it rallied against it because he knew it was the right thing to do.

"We knew deep down we trusted him as a person and a leader. Never mind holding your head high he can walk tall for the rest of his life.

"His way of handling things is with a dignified approach. One of his heroes was Bobby Robson and he wanted to approach everything with dignity and even leave with dignity and he's done that.

"You could see that on Sunday that was just enough.

"If England ever go on to win a major trophy you can trace it back to Gareth's time and Trevor Brooking who put the plans in place when it clearly wasn't working."

Assuming the FA want to keep the manager English, then Graham Potter wouldn't be a bad shout. He is currently available and, despite his poor stint at Chelsea, he still has a good reputation given his excellent time at Brighton.

  9. 'Howe and Carsley have done very good jobs'published at 16:20 16 July

    16:20 16 July

    England

Former England managing director Adrian Bevington has praised the character of Gareth Southgate after resigning from his post as England manager earlier today.

"He's a very tough act to follow. Finding the right replacement is the hard part here," Bevington told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"They've got to decide the profile of the individual they want and it's really important this person can handle the off field issues too. You're almost a Prime Ministerial person and I think Gareth has done that better than anyone.

"They have to decide if they want a home grown coach or not. The list is there. Eddie Howe has done a very good job with Newcastle and Bournemouth. But he's in the job, he may not want it.

"Lee Carsley is in the FA and has done a very good job. But they might decide to go with a foriegn elite coach. That's what they've got to decide and that's the way they will go."

  10. 'Southgate has dealt with everything with outstanding character and great dignity'published at 16:18 16 July

    16:18 16 July

    England

Former England managing director Adrian Bevington has praised the character of Gareth Southgate after resigning from his post as England manager earlier today.

"It's really clear to anybody who spends time with Gareth Southgate that he could be someone who had a big future as a coach and could be a senior figure," Bevington told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I wasn't surprised and I believe it's the right decision for Gareth, He's an absolutely outstanding individual. He goes with his head held high and culturally he's changed things behind the scenes. This is a man who's an inspiration to anybody who spends time with him.

"He's taken us so close and improved our performance.

"Gareth is a strong individual. He's built a really robust group around him and has a good support network. The players are absolutely with him which is really important. I don't think we've seen an England group together like this for generations.

"He's dealt with everything with outstanding character and great dignity."

  11. 'Eddie Howe is committed to Newcastle'published at 16:14 16 July

    16:14 16 July

Newcastle United chief executive Darren Eales has said manager Eddie Howe is committed to the Magpies amid speculation with replacing Gareth Southgate as England manage.

Since Southgate resigned after eight years as Three Lions boss, the name of Newcastle boss Howe has been among those heavily touted with replacing Southgate as England manager.

“Itis that speculation. Obviously Eddie has been an amazing manager for the club,he’s committed to the club with the work that he’s done and what he’s shown," said Eales.

"We’re obviously committed to him. He had a multi-year extension last summer andwe’re on an exciting journey. As far as we’re concerned, Eddie is the man tolead us on that. From that perspective, there’s nothing really I can add."

More from BBC Sport's Kelly Somers who has written an open letter to Gareth Southgate, having worked as England reporter since 2021.

Thank you Gareth, for giving this reporter, who grew up watching an England team rarely go deep into tournaments, the opportunity to have a front row seat when they did. And when they do eventually lift that trophy, I hope you still get satisfaction in knowing that you have laid the foundations for that success.

But for now, as you also said to me in an interview in Germany - whatever happened out there, your dog will still greet you the same way regardless when you walk back through the door. So enjoy those dog walks Gareth, you’ve earned them.

    Kelly.

Live: Gareth Southgate quits as England manager - reaction (8)

More from BBC Sport's Kelly Somers who has written an open letter to Gareth Southgate, having worked as England reporter since 2021.

This tournament did feel like it had taken its toll. Whilst the smiles and handshakes never stopped, there were times when you walked in, I felt the weight of expectation on your shoulders, as well as the desperation to succeed. The mood did lift after Switzerland - the celebrations post match with the fans perhaps went some way in reassuring you there was still belief in you and your plan, but it was clearly too little, too late.

“What happens on Sunday will define me to others but not to myself” was your message in our final sit down interview - and it was clear now, you already knew that you’d gone as far as you could as England manager. I don’t believe there is anyone that would have wanted to lift that trophy more on Sunday, or in 2018, 2021 or 2022. And I don’t believe there is anyone who dealt with you regularly, as we did, that didn’t want you to end with that either.

  14. 'Gareth, you asked how we were - and it felt real'published at 16:01 16 July

    16:01 16 July

Live: Gareth Southgate quits as England manager - reaction (9)

BBC Sport's Kelly Somers has written an open letter to Gareth Southgate, having worked as England reporter since 2021.

    Dear Gareth,

I’m writing this as someone who’s had the privilege of being in your company quite a lot for the last three years, so shall we start with an apology? I’m sorry that winning and progressing in tournaments came with the caveat that meaning you had to speak to me so much. But for what it’s worth, over the past three years they have given me some of my career highlights.

But this isn’t just the moments on the pitch or on camera - for which there were many - it was the moments off it too that will stay with me. Every interview we did - without fail - you walked in, said hello and shook every crew member’s hand. You asked how we were - and it didn’t feel just routine. It felt real. I can imagine at times that the job as England manager doesn’t make you feel very human, but you always did.

Never once I've called for Gareth to go, what he has achieved as England boss is a record in it's self & he should hold his head high. Hopefully next manager will with this squad take us over the line.

  17. 'I think a lot of Thomas Tuchel'published at 15:47 16 July

    15:47 16 July

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England fan Steve: "I think it is time for a change. The England talent has been on an upward curve and I think you can put a lot of that down to the influence of excellent foreign coaches in the Premier League, especially Pep Guardiola."

"But I don't think we can get Guardiola. It needs an elite tactician and Gareth Southgate has rightly been given praise for his man management and squad-building capabilities.

"As a Chelsea fan I think a lot of Thomas Tuchel. He did remarkable things not only in his tactics but leading the club through a very difficult time."

Maybe just maybe, now that Southgate has gone, we’ll all look back on this period and realise how lucky we were to have him and hopefully be ashamed of the criticism we unfairly gave him.

    England

England and Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier has paid tribute to Gareth Southgate and has backed him to be a success in whatever role he ends up in.

"Want to say thank you to Gareth for everything," Trippier posted on Instagram, external.

"A top coach who I know will be successful where ever his next role may be. Thank you."

  20. 'I'm glad he walked'published at 15:34 16 July

    15:34 16 July

    BBC Radio 5 Live

    Campaigner Dan Armstrong continues:

"I'm glad that he walked before the FA listened to his critics and did something drastic. I think regardless of the result on Sunday he was going to walk anyway. He has had a lot of critics online and in the media - he get too much of it.

"The England expectation now is that we can win this tournament and the reason why we have that expectation is because of what Gareth Southgate and his squads have done in previous tournaments."
