Duties and Responsibilities
Loyola University Chicago’s School of Environmental Sustainability( SES - www.luc.edu/sustainability) seeks a Research Associate (MS prepared) for a 2-year researchand teaching position to assist in the implementation of alarge-scale experimental wetland restoration project and to teachtwo undergraduate Environmental Science courses per year. Thesuccessful candidate will principally work with the research teamto implement a large-scale experimental ecological restorationproject at the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge ( SWNR ). Theseresearch activities will involve coordinating and implementing themechanical biomass harvest and restoration of a 117-hectareinvasive-species dominated wetland at SNWR ; overseeing the on-siteconversion of harvested biomass to biochar; experimentally applyingthe biochar to treatment plots; and collecting a wide suite ofenvironmental and biological data from experimental plots. Thecandidate will be responsible for data collection and management,managing and coordinating the maintenance of the SES Softrakwetland plant harvester, managing the research laboratory in theSES, and mentoring SES undergraduate and graduate students in theproject.
This is a 2-year full-time Research Associate position supported inpart by a US Fish and Wildlife Service grant and through teachingresponsibilities within SES . The Research Associate will reportdirectly to the PIs on the projects and will begin on July 1, 2024,and end on June 30, 2026.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Assisting in all aspects of implementing the US Fish andWildlife Service projects (field restoration, botanical surveys andbiodiversity monitoring, biomass utilization, statistical analysis,and data interpretation). This includes the field researchcomponents of the project – eight to ten weeks of summer residenceat the University ofMichigan Biological Station and at Shiawassee NationalWildlife Refuge per year required
- Loyola Research Lab oversight and organization: organization oflab, organization of data, managing lab research projects, orderingsupplies, hiring and oversight of student researchers
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in Ecology,Environmental Science, Wetland Ecology, Conservation &Restoration, or a related field, with demonstrated competence inteaching, fieldwork, research design, sample analyses, statisticalanalyses, and writing manuscripts. The candidate must haveexcellent written and oral communication skills, strongorganizational skills, and demonstrate reliability and leadershipwithin a team. Experience mentoring students is preferred.
